WIN THE BATTLE WITH BUCKTHORN (FOR GOOD)

Invasive Buckthorn Removal

+ Our Buckthorn Maintenance Program

At Whitetail Forestry, we offer a complete buckthorn removal and maintenance program designed to eliminate existing growth, control regrowth, and restore your land long-term.

Buckthorn is basically a swear word

in Southern Wisconsin & Northern Ilinois

  • Buckthorn is one of the most aggressive invasive species in the Midwest. Simply cutting or mulching it down does not solve the problem.

  • When you cut buckthorn down, it often comes back thicker due to its deep root system and long-lasting seed bank.

  • Forestry mulching is the best way to remove invasive buckthorn. But we know you need to keep it gone, too, so we've developed a buckthorn maintenance program to keep it gone for good.

WHITETAIL FORESTRY'S BUCKTHORN MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

What’s Included in Our Buckthorn Maintenance Program?

Everything you need to keep invasive buckthorn dead for good.

1.

Initial Site Clearing (Forestry Mulching)

We begin by removing dense buckthorn and invasive brush using professional forestry mulching equipment.

This step:

  • Eliminates mature buckthorn and overgrowth

  • Opens up the canopy and restores visibility

  • Creates immediate usable space

  • Leaves material mulched on-site

  • Gets rid of the uglies (let's be real)

2.

Regrowth Control (Targeted Herbicide Application)

After clearing, buckthorn will attempt to return through root systems and new seedlings. This is where most approaches fail — but it’s where our program becomes effective.

We apply targeted herbicide treatments to:

  • Kill new buckthorn sprouts at the root

  • Control seedlings emerging from the soil seed bank

  • Prevent re-establishment of dense growth

3.

Land Restoration with No-Mow Grass or Native Cover

To prevent buckthorn from returning, we replace it with desirable vegetation.

Options include:

  • No-mow grass (fine fescue blends for low maintenance)

  • Native grass or habitat mixes (for wildlife and long-term restoration)

The benefits are:

  • Reduces open soil where invasives thrive

  • Creates natural competition against buckthorn

  • Improves appearance and usability of your property

4.

Ongoing Maintenance & Monitoring

Long-term success in the buckthorn battle requires continued oversight (especially in the first 1–2 years).

Our maintenance program includes:

  • Scheduled follow-up visits

  • Spot treatment of any new buckthorn growth

  • Monitoring of previously cleared areas

  • Optional mowing or touch-up clearing if needed
